Father's Day and Summer Solstice

The Summer Solstice was on Father's Day this year. It was a cold, cloudy rainy day here. The opposite of the expected long summer day. I knew we wouldn't get sunrise and sunset pictures on Sunday so I took pictures the day before of sunrise at 4:20 a.m. and sunset at 11:40.  It was really pretty, as most sunrises and sunsets are.

For Father's Day the ward gave the dads an M&M bowtie. I thought it was funny that was what Spencer's ward did too. The magic of Pinterest.

I picked LeAnn up from the airport on Friday at noon. She is here to babysit for Kate for a week while Kate and Jed go fishing with some friends from Oregon. I enjoyed waiting in the cell phone lot and watching the float planes land. They fly in about every 1-2 minutes.

Kate had a bear adventure on a hike this week. She was hiking by Palmer with a group of friends and their children. Kate and another mother were at the tail end with the slower, younger kids when they saw a black bear about 25 yards away. They gathered in a tight circle, made a lot of noise and pulled out the bear horn and bear spray. Kate said she grabbed for the spray instead of her camera because the bear was too close. The bear started to walk towards them then stopped and walked away. I think the little kids made enough noise to  scare the bear away. When Jed and Kate were hiking by Girdwood and the kids were being noisy another hiker said he would rent the kids to scare the bears away. They are good noise makers. But sorry no bear pictures.

We went for a hike along the coastal trail in Anchorage and enjoyed the beautiful views. The tide was out so Kate and the kids hiked down to a beach area. They found some pretty green stones and sea glass. You can't go out very far because the mud is like quicksand and you can get stuck. It was a bit steep for me to hike down and I was afraid that being heavier I  would sink in the mud for sure.

We had the missionaries come for dinner on Saturday night. They gave us a spiritual thought and we gave them dinner. The spiritual thought was very good and the dinner was okay too (Cafe Rio fixings). The missionaries are from Lyman, Wyoming and Dallas, Texas so they weren't familiar with Cafe Rio. They liked it I think.

Spiritual thought: We enjoyed watching the video A Father Indeed on YouTube. It is a short video about a father who works hard for his family and his example of love, integrity and sacrifice.  A father's love is more than working to provide material things. It is caring enough to spend the time and effort to show your love.  We are grateful for our fathers in our lives. They were examples of hard work and love. We know they wanted what was best for each of their children and worked hard for their family. One of Elder Robinson's favorite memories with his dad was riding horses with him at Humboldt, Arizona. It has been a lifelong love of horses that he learned from his dad. My favorite memory was painting the wood fence with my dad and hearing him whistle while he worked.  He traveled so much with work I think he liked having home projects and being at home. It surprised me he was so happy to work that he whistled. I hope you will think of a favorite Dad memory and share it with your children.

Hope you enjoy your summer activities this week. We loved talking with kids on Father's Day. Thank you so much for your thoughtfulness!

Love,

Elder and Sister Robinson

Some random pictures of a solar dancing flower in a car and pretty Alaska Summer. I hope you know how much we love and think of you but the blog may be a little off schedule with family visits the next few weeks. I'll do my best.
